Nova's powers come from an energy source called the Nova Force, an unlimited energy generated by a living computer called the Xandarian Worldmind, which grants superhuman abilities including flight, superhuman strength, speed, and durability, as well as the ability to absorb energy directed against him and release it as pulses and beams. Nova debuted in The Man Called Nova #1, written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by John Buscema in 1976. Wolfman intended the young character to be a tribute to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man, following his humble working-class roots and alter ego.
