Its skin was nigh impervious to weapons forged of iron, a testament to the unforgiving nature of the dark places of the world where it dwelt. Clutched within its colossal three-fingered grasp was a mighty stone hammer, a fearsome instrument of destruction that it wielded with blind fury. With each thunderous swing, friend and foe alike were laid low, crushed beneath the indiscriminate wrath of the beast as it stormed through the chaotic melee, seeking out its quarry with a relentless fervour that echoed the darkness of its masters' hearts.The Cave Troll was the first creature to be designed for the iconic film trilogy, and Weta Workshop sculptor Jamie Beswarick played a key role in its overall design. In those early days, the look and feel of Middle-earth's inhabitants were still being defined, with artists encouraged to envision not only their appearances but also their habits and histories. This approach aimed to develop a level of authenticity that went beyond the typical fantasy genre.Consequently, these lumbering giants were endowed with thick hides, three-fingered hands, powerful jaws, and claws suited for digging. It was these defining characteristics that Jamie Beswarick was once again tasked with recreating, this time in miniature form. By capturing the raw strength and ferocity of such a creature, and infusing each detail with untamed wrath and fury, our incredible team has managed to capture the very essence of this behemoth. Their skills being surprisingly complementary, they fought alongside each other and overcame many insurmountable odds along their travels.Gimli accomplished many feats throughout his life, playing an instrumental role in the battle of Helms Deep, the battle at Pelennor Fields and the battle at the Black Gate. As a gift he was granted three strands of hair from the Lady Galadriel, earning himself the name 'Lockbearer'. Among the first of his kind to be pulled from the earth, Lurtz was tall, even for an Uruk. No sooner had he emerged than Saruman bent him to his will, setting the Uruk-hai on their snivelling Orc overseers in a test of loyalty and strength. Using one of the lost Seeing Stones of Númenor, the Wizard sought to spy upon the Dark Lord, but was tricked into communing with him through the polished black orb. In his arrogance he believed himself capable of usurping Sauron's place. Even as he did his new master's bidding, the corrupted Wizard plotted a second betrayal. The process of making a film is oft an ever-changing journey. One such changed aspect was the helm worn by the Witch-king during The Return of the King. Whilst this first design was manufactured, and even had scenes shot, it was ultimately decided that its likeness to Sauron's own helm might be perplexing for the audience. Therefore, it was replaced with the Morgul Lord War Mask seen in the final cut of the film.Greatest of the Nazgûl was their leader, the Witch-king of Angmar. Once a mortal man lured by the promise of power, the former King of Men fell under the sway of Sauron until he was little more than an extension of the Dark Lord's presence, his own identity long forgotten. A formless wraith, fear was his greatest weapon, and it was said that by the hand of no man would he fall. For centuries he served his dark master, leading the campaign that saw Arnor destroyed in the north and bringing war to Gondor in the south.
