The Aero Clock isn't just a 3D wooden mechanical model, or a pretty showpiece. The Ugears Clock is an actual working clock that you can build yourself, mount to a wall, wind up, then watch as the seconds, minutes, and hours tick by. The Aero Clock is an ingenious puzzle and DIY clock mechanism, unlike any other clock. It is a lovely piece of precise engineering that reveals the workings of a weighted pendulum clock to builders and viewers alike. This simple-yet-elegant Ugears clock is driven by the force of gravity pulling down a weighted bag (you can fill the bag with sand or salt). Raise the bag on its pulleys to wind the clock. As the weight slowly descends, it rotates a drive gear, which then rotates an escape wheel through a reducer. The clock features an adjustable weighted pendulum which interacts with the escape wheel through the steady tick-tock of the anchor mechanism. You can adjust the clock's ticking action to the second, by sliding the pendulum's top and bottom weights. The reducer also transmits rotation to an hour disc and a minute disc. One of the interesting features of our Aero Clock is that time is not read with rotating hands on a clock face, but rather a fixed pointer indicates time on the slowly-rotating, numbered hour and minute discs. Moreover, these discs rotate counterclockwise—did you know that before standardization, some clocks moved clockwise while others moved counterclockwise? In the role of "cuckoo” the Ugears Aero Clock features a model hot air balloon. The suspended balloon rapidly descends when the hour strikes, then slowly rises again over the course of the next hour.

The Ugears wooden model clock kit celebrates the role of clocks in exploration. Did you know the problem of calculating longitude, critical to accurate navigation at sea, was solved with a clock? The idea was proposed by Dutch mathematician Gemma Frisius in 1530, but it wasn't until the mid-18th century when English clockmaker John Harrison developed a series of shipboard clocks so precise (accurate to within a ? of a second per day) that ship captains could at last calculate their position at sea to within a few nautical miles. By knowing the exact time back in London (Greenwich Meridian Time, or GMT), and calculating the time at current position with celestial observation, navigators could calculate where they were on the earth's surface. Latitude had been solved by the Phoenicians as early as 600 B.C. with celestial reckoning—measuring the altitude of the sun at noon, or the angle made between the North Star (or other navigational stars) and the horizon. But the longitude problem would bedevil explorers for another 2,000 years. Harrison was eventually awarded the £20,000 first prize (roughly $1.5 million today) established in Parliament's Longitude Act of 1714, after demonstrating the accuracy of his masterful clocks at sea. Books have been used to hide items, in real life and in fiction, for almost as long as there have been books. Homeowners can conceal valuables from burglars by hollowing out a book and placing it on a bookshelf with other tomes. The secret book is easily found by the homeowner, but nearly impossible to find for the crook. In "The Matrix," Neo hides computer discs and cash inside a book, and who can forget the prison breakout in "Shawshank Redemption," accomplished using a rock hammer concealed in a Bible, the pages cut out starting at "Exodus." Everyone loves puzzles and riddles and this Secret Book from Ugears is just that—a big riddle with a series of puzzles that must be solved to open the secret compartment and see what's inside!

You can set any three-digit combination you want on your Ugears Book of Secrets by removing the pin block inside the secret compartment. Turn the dials to the combination you want and reinsert the pin block. The key release mechanism will now work with the combination you have set. When you press the lever under the bottom of the book's spine the key will pop out of its slot at the top of the spine. The lever will not eject the key if the three tumblers are set to any other number sequence. You can reset the three-digit combination any time you like by following the same sequence—open the 3D wooden box, remove the pin block, reset the combination, reinsert the pin block, and the key release mechanism is now set to the new combination.

Did you forget the combination? Oh no, now what? Don't worry, our designers and engineers have you covered. There are two different ways to access the contents of the box without the combination. You can open the Book of Secrets by simply prising off the back panel— insert a flat tool like a screwdriver or metal ruler into the slot between the back panel and the box, then gently jimmy the panel in several places to lift and remove the panel, giving you access to the box. You can also play safe cracker, discovering the combination through touch. Press the key release lever with your finger, holding it in with slight pressure, then rotate each tumbler sequentially. You'll feel that the correct number on each tumbler turns slightly tighter than the others, and that the lever slightly shifts under your finger as the correct number clicks into place. When the last drum is set to the correct number the indicator on the spine changes from closed to open—the key release is now engaged.

What do they say about a finely-tuned motor—it runs like clockwork? Flip the script with the Ugears Engine Clock, a finely-tuned clock that runs (and looks) like a motor! This functional mechanical table clock with pendulum has an automotive theme throughout, with an engine block design on top with moving pistons, and time display in the style of a speedometer (hours) and tachometer (minutes). The action of the clock's pendulum and escapement make a delightful ticking sound, as the passing seconds are displayed on the escapement at the rear of the clock. The Engine Clock tells time for up to 5 hours on a single winding (running time can be extended an additional 60 to 90 minutes if the pistons are disengaged). A retrograde mechanism on the minute hand automatically resets after 60 minutes.

Wind your Engine Clock using the ignition key at the front of the clock. To set the time, turn the large gear closest to the face of the clock (the retrograde mechanism) in a clockwise direction until the minute hand falls to zero, then use your finger to move the hour hand counterclockwise, positioning it at the current hour. Set the minute hand at the current time by again turning the large gear just behind the clockface. If the clock is running fast or slow you can make adjustments to the pendulum. Raise or lower the circular weight at the bottom of the pendulum for larger time adjustments, and raise or lower the ball at the top the pendulum for fine-tuning.

Built of solid blocks of stone, and towering over 100 m high, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world. It survived more than a thousand years until a series of earthquakes, the last in 1303, caused it to tumble into the sea. Remnants of the great lighthouse, including granite blocks, columns and statues, were rediscovered on the floor of Alexandria's harbor in 1968 and can still be seen by divers today.

You look "marble-ous!"

Introducing the Marble Run Stepped Hoist, the second in a series of Ugears modular marble runs. This fun and fascinating wooden marble run features an ingenious 3-stepped alternating lift mechanism and a set of new features to hold your attention as you watch the marbles make their cyclical journey. Multiple tracks and elements are packed into a compact space in this DIY marble run.

The model has a 3-stage alternating lift that hands the marbles back and forth as they climb to the top to embark on their amusement park adventures. Which marble will take which track, and which will make it down first? The Marble Run Stepped Hoist features a 3-marble accumulator in which the third ball opens the gates for the trapped first and second marbles, sending all three along their divergent paths. There are three tracks: the first consists of a 2-marble accumulator and serpentine run, the second is a hammer swing inside a C-shaped cradle, and the third has a whirlpool or funnel. All marbles eventually pass through the collection tray and into the seesaw lift. A rocker switch mechanism either sends the marbles back along the return track to the 3-stepped lift, or (and this is where it gets really exciting!) into another attached Ugears marble run.

We have designed the Ugears line of marble runs to be modular, that is, each model works as a standalone, or it can be connected frontally or laterally to other Ugears marble runs of the same or different design (2 or 4 models can be connected, in pairs, using the special connectors included in the kit). The rocker mechanism at the end of the run can send marbles in one direction or the other, or in both directions (depending on the attached weight), returning marbles to the original hoist or sending them to a different marble run. With adjoining marble runs you now have an amazing, complex system of interconnected elements, all powered by a single crank. It's like a miniature amusement park! Keep an eye on your favorite marble—who knows where it will end up, when it will return to its starting point, or what rides it will take along the way!

In wrist and pocket watches a tourbillon mechanism helps increase accuracy by counteracting the effects of gravity when the watch is stationary. By seating the escape and balance wheel within a rotating cage, slight errors in timekeeping introduced by the force of gravity are averaged out. In table clocks and wall-mounted clocks a tourbillon often serves a more decorative purpose. The first prototype of the tourbillon was developed in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, who also succeeded in reducing the size of the mechanism and mounting it into a pocket watch. More than a century later, in 1920, the "flying tourbillon" was developed by Alfred Helwig, which opened the mechanism to view by having it mounted on only one side, endowing it with an aesthetic function. Today, there are many variations on the tourbillon mechanism, including single, double and triple axis designs, but what is common to all designs is that they are a daunting engineering challenge, such that a watch featuring a tourbillon will fetch a significantly higher price than models that lack the mechanism. The idea that you can build your own tourbillon out of composite wood, from a DIY model kit, without need of glue or special tools, is kind of amazing, but amazement is what our Ugears customers have come to expect.
The Sky Watcher tourbillon mechanism has three axes of rotation: around the vertical axis of the clock, horizontal axis of the clock, and relative to the central axis of the inner sphere. The wind-up clock operates based on the accumulation of potential energy in a flat spring, and the metered release of this energy. When the model is fully wound it can power the timepiece for approximately 2-3 hours, sufficient for long observation of the mesmerizing mechanism, or to provide a pleasant background ticking clock sound and visual diversion for a period of work or rest. Rather than an all-too-common clock face with hands, we have created additional interest by having the time display placed on reels. The minute reel rotates smoothly with the progress of the tourbillon, while the hour reel marks the passage of time with a percussive mechanism.
